What is Critical Thinking? (9A)

The moment our minds are capable of processing information, our minds go off and begin to wonder, question, believe, reject, observe, and absorb all kinds of information. The best kinds of questions are the one that leave people searching for an unknown answer.

When it comes to critical thinking of course people automatically think that it means to think outside the box. I think that critical thinking is the “overthinking” of an idea, topic or subject. It’s the kind of thinking that sparks new theories, and questions previous ideas. To be a critical thinker you have to go beyond what is expected, you have to expand your thoughts and ideas even farther than you would normally. It’s great to ask bizarre, out of the normal questions because it could be the birth of a new concept in our world. Also a major part of critical thinking is accepting other people’s ideas and opinions. You need to be open minded with other ideas because it can allow other people to question your own ideas and it could lead to new discoveries!

Years ago, people thought that the world was flat and that if you traveled too far, you would fall off the face of the earth. Right now, this sounds silly to us, but in reality people actually believed this. They didn’t have the knowledge we do now! If it weren’t for those critical thinkers/ curious people we wouldn’t be where we are today.  Today, some believe that we aren’t alone in this universe. Some think that life exist in distance galaxies from us. No one can really be sure but it’s perfectly okay to question and wonder about space and the universe.

We need people to question the works and theories that are out there. Did you know that 95% of our oceans remain unexplored? This one fact that really made me ponder upon my thoughts for days. To me it seemed unreal that we have only discovered 5% of our oceans! The only reason that is true is because we don’t have the technology to be able to go down to the depth of the unknown and mysterious ocean. Once people begin thinking of ways to get there we will slowly begin uncovering one of the many mysteries left in this world, with more to come!

Thinking is one thing but critical thinking is going beyond just thinking, but asking insane questions, wondering what if, rejecting a theory and coming up with a new one. This type of thinking is essential for life in general. We need to be able to think outside of the box so that we can spark new ideas. Creating new ideas could bring us that much more closer to figuring out unknown answers.

In college I have been thinking more and more about what I want to become. I have been questioning whether or not I want to become a teacher, what if a different career is calling my name. This ties back to getting out of your comfort zone and trying new and exciting things. Sonia Sotomayor even talked about signing up for classes that have nothing to do with your major just for the heck of it. As I was looking through the catalog book I saw an astronomy class and I was so interested to learn more about it. For some reason, I have a strong interest in learning about our universe, planets, stars, and galaxies. Astronomy makes me wonder about the things that are out there. I don’t think that we are the only living creatures in the entire universe. Billion of light years away there has to be some type of living creatures, or maybe we are the only ones in this universe. I defiantly want to take a class here at Southern about astronomy to see what it’s like. I want to see if I really am interested in astronomy, and if I’m not then there was no harm in trying.
